Why Upgrade

When Your Panel Needs to Go

Your main panel is the heart of the electrical system. Panels from the 1960s–80s were built for a fraction of today's load — no EV charger, no heat pump, no induction range, no home office. Add a recalled brand like Federal Pacific or Zinsco and you have a panel that insurers increasingly refuse to cover.

Araz Electric replaces and upgrades main panels of any size. We handle the load calculation, the PG&E application, the permit, and the final city inspection — you get a modern, correctly sized service with a clean inspection card.

  • Service upgrades: 100A → 200A, 200A → 400A, and larger
  • Recalled Federal Pacific (FPE), Zinsco and Sylvania panel replacement
  • Insurance-required panel replacements with documentation for your carrier
  • Meter-main combos, sub-panels and feeder upgrades
  • PG&E service coordination — overhead and underground
  • Permit, inspection and PG&E release handled for you
  • Lifetime warranty on all labor

Multi-Family & Commercial

Multi-Meter Panels for Apartments, Duplexes and Mixed-Use

Duplexes, fourplexes and apartment complexes need a service that gives every unit its own meter and main breaker, sized for the whole building. We design and install multi-meter main service equipment and coordinate the PG&E metering. Plan for a building-wide outage on changeover day, roughly 8 am to 8 pm (often earlier). Panels with four or more meters usually need a second day, with power back by about 8 pm the following day. If the panel is being relocated, we build the new service at the new location first, so even a large panel is only dark on the disconnect/reconnect day. We schedule all of this with you and your tenants in advance.

For commercial tenants and landlords we upgrade services for new equipment, EV charging, kitchen build-outs and tenant improvements — including three-phase where the utility provides it.

  • Multi-meter main service panels for 2–20+ units
  • House-meter and common-area panels
  • Service upgrades for EV charging in parking areas
  • Three-phase commercial service upgrades
  • Outage window planned with property managers and tenants — ~8 am–8 pm, plus a second day for 4+ meter panels
  • Load calculations and one-line diagrams for permit

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know if I need a panel upgrade?

Common signs are a panel rated 100A or less, a Federal Pacific, Zinsco or Sylvania label, breakers that trip regularly, no room for new circuits, or an insurance carrier asking for replacement. Adding an EV charger, heat pump, hot tub or ADU almost always calls for a service upgrade. We can confirm with an on-site load review.

Do you replace Federal Pacific and Zinsco panels?

Yes. Both brands have known breaker failures and most insurers will not cover a home with one. We replace them with modern, properly sized panels and provide the documentation your carrier asks for.

Do I need a permit for a panel replacement?

Yes — every panel replacement and service upgrade in California requires a permit and a city or county inspection, and PG&E will not reconnect an unpermitted service. Araz Electric pulls the permit and schedules the inspection as part of the job.

How large a service can you install?

Any size. We routinely do 100A, 200A and 400A services, and larger single-phase and three-phase services for multi-family and commercial properties.

Will PG&E need to be involved?

For most service upgrades, yes. We submit the PG&E application, coordinate the service drop or underground work, and schedule the disconnect and reconnect so your outage is as short as possible.

How long will tenants be without power for a multi-meter panel replacement?

Plan on roughly 8 am to 8 pm on the changeover day, often earlier. Panels with four or more meters usually take a second day, with power restored by about 8 pm the following day. If the panel is being relocated, we build the new service first, so even a large panel is only without power on the disconnect/reconnect day. We schedule the outage with you and your tenants in advance.

Is the work warrantied?

Yes. Araz Electric provides a lifetime warranty on labor for every panel we install, plus the manufacturer's warranty on equipment.
